AN EPIC DECISION

The University of North Texas recently installed a HP 5500 Indigo Press to eliminate the backlog on their HP 3050 press. "Itfs working out really great" lauds Jimmy Friend, Director of Printing/Eagle Images/Mail Services at the Denton-based University. The new digital press is just one of the many changes taking place at the in-plant facility.

Friend noted not only were they spending a great deal of money on outsourcing finishing services, the outsourcing was also putting a drag on delivery dates. "The quality expectations of our in-plant customerfs are very high. We couldnft risk having a high quality piece ruined while going through the mail stream. Consequently, we pushed for coating on many mail pieces. Once our customers saw how UV coating enhanced the finished piece?they demanded it!" stated, Jimmy.

"After a close inspection of three coating machine manufacturers the decision was very clear?the Epic CT-660 Coater! It was easy to operate. We didnft need a technical engineer to get the job done. Also, the 660 offered gloss & dull coating along with a variety of size configurations. Another strong consideration was the safety factor. The Epic coater is an enclosed unit, which keeps odors and UV light leakage out of the pressroom. Of course, after seeing the quality on sample pieces, it was no doubt "An Epic Decision".

The University of North Texas in-plant shop has 40 full-time employees and 15 students. The shop has won numerous in-plant awards over the years. In 2008, it earned (3) gold, (2) silver and (1) bronze award?thatfs the more than any other in-plant won in a "non-offset" category.

Over 35,000 students attend the University of North Texas?the 3rd largest University in Texas.
